My mother is a Southern Baptist
My father is a Methodist
My sister is a "born again" Church of Christ
I am a Catholic

Seems to me we all had a freedom of choice.

My mother is Catholic, and my father is Atheist (his family is Protestant). We were not baptized because my father wanted us to have a choice in what religion we wanted to be when we grew up. It was a great gift. I am now Pagan and my brother believes that Aliens created the world. Granted we are a little strange, but family gatherings are always interesting. The best part is that we choose who and what religion we followed, and were never forced into molds that didn't fit us.

I tease my parents all of the time, that I am a Pagan because of them. The truth is, I would have become Pagan regardless. I just do it without feeling guilty, like I probably would have had I been baptized and forced to go to church.

Thanks Mom and Dad.

My parents were Baptist, so I grew up Baptist. I didn't have freedom of religion for the simple fact that I was too young to really understand what it was all about. When I turned seventeen, I decided to check out the various religions for myself. It took quite a few years, but I eventually joined the Catholic Church in 2000. My father didn't seem to be to bothered by it, but it took quite a toll on my mother. Ever since the day I told them that I was going to become Catholic, she hasn't quite acted the same around me. I also lost friends over the fact that I became a Catholic. So, to answer your question, no I didn't have religious freedom when I was a youngster, but my parents didn't stop me from "feeling out" religions on my own. I became a Catholic because that's what is right to me. I've suffered the consequences of making that choice, but I'd gladly go through it all again if necessary.

Absolutely. I was raised in a Protestant house hold even though you could not say they where practicing ones. My mum became a born again christian when i was 7. And all of us as children where baptized. They always taught us we where free to choose for ourselves as adults what faith we wanted or did not want. Just over 2 years ago i reverted to Islam and my parents could not be more supportive. They are great parents and have always taught us wonderful morals whether religious or otherwise.

My dad was a preacher in an evangelical church.

He left the ministry when I was fairly young.

He and my Mom divorced not very many years after that.

My Mom, may she be blessed forever for doing so, encouraged me to attend different religious services. I went to Temple with Jewish friends, I went to tent revival meetings, I went to Mass in Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, I went to spiritual retreat centers and learned to meditate, etc..

I was encouraged to find my own way.

Admittedly, I think that she was a little surprised that I found a spiritual home in Paganism, but she didn't condemn, and she actually decided to find out more about it before saying anything.

At this point, she's perfectly comfortable with me following the spiritual path I've chosen.

I am VERY blessed in my Mom.

Hello

It is a parents responsibility to raise a child in the way he SHOULD go and when he is older he will not depart from it, it does not say that the child would not go out and test the water, but it is the hopes that the child will also return to its roots.

No parents give freedom of religion to their children.

Nope, my parents did not. My mom is a Christian and still keeps trying to reconvert me. It'll never happen. Organized religion isn't my preference. Religion isn't my preference, spirituality, that's my preference.
