Opponents will often insist that you stay in the game a little longer if you take away their money; and they make it difficult for you to leave. How can I get around this?

Since you're winning other player's money, you must be playing poker. In live poker games, it is absolutely your right to get up and leave at any time, but poker is a gentleman's game, and a true poker player should take pride in being both honorable and respectful of the other players. To that end, it should be noted that leaving immediately after you win a big pot is rude and, to some, insulting. It is like slapping someone in the face and then running away so that they can't hit you back. The best way to avoid this situation is to know in advance what time you plan on leaving the game. Then, about a half an hour before you are going to go, announce to the table "hey, i'm out of here in half an hour." That way, the other players are aware in advance that if the bet big against you and lose, they won't have as much of a chance to win their chips back. When that half an hour is up, announce that you are playing your last hand as that hand is dealt, so that, again, the other players can know that they won't have as much chance to win any chips back from you. Finally, if you do happen to win a really big pot on your last hand, then offer to stay for three more hands to give someone one last chance to win a few chips back. You don't have to bet anything in those three hands, and in fact, you could tell yourself that you're going to just fold all three of them no matter what the cards are, it will appear to the other players that you really, absolutely weren't just trying to win one huge pot and then bolt. As much as most players like to trash talk and brag about their game, having good manners and being respectful of your other players is really the best way to avoid sticky situations where you have to choose between playing the game well/enjoying your winnings and making someone mad.

It's called a hit and run and i have no problem doing this. I thank them for there money and i get up and go, unless they are your parents or a good friend just get up and go. I know when i play a cash game and i either win so much money or lose so much money, i am done no matter what someone says to me. I remember one time i had just sat down and bought in for 150.00 dollars, and was dealt two kings and two players got it all in against me. I won the pot and got up to go and the other two players insisted i stay, i told them no and got up and left, what do i care what they say to me, i got the money so why stay. Poker is not about being a gentleman, it is about winning money. I have yet to meat many gentlemen in a game of poker, there is no rule that you have to stay in a game just because you won a big pot, poker is all about winning money, thank them and go blow it all on the craps table.

Collect your money and think about it for a second. Look the person in the eye and say, "alright, let me go grab a smoke/take a leak real quick" and head for the designated area. If it's in a casino, that's no problem, you head that way and you disappear. If it's in a house, do something that involves stepping outside, like smoking. Tell the guy you've got a cigar in your car and you want to have a little before you have to head home. Go outside, get in the car, and jam it home. If you play with the guy regularly, tell him next time that when you went out to smoke, you got a call on your cell and had to head back for an emergency. If he doesn't understand, you can always find another game.

If you actually want to win at cards and make money, then you need to leave once you have made a profit, no matter what the circumstances. That's the whole point of gambling - to make money.

Set boundaries before the game starts. Say, "if I win $____(fill in the blank), then I'm done." Tell them there is no whining or b i t c h i n g allowed. Tell them you will respect their wishes as to when to quit as well.

Tell them you're tired and have to get up early. Or you forgot to do some homework. Anything to get out before you give them all that money back.

I completely agree with butterat2001's answer.
Being respectful at the table and not running after winning a big pot will gain you some respect too.

good luck at your next poker night!

ok, here are some suggestions:

a.) Tell them they can win it back next time.

b.) Tell them your wife promise to give you a "wink wink nudge nudge" if you get back home early. Darn if you let anybody keep you from getting your "wink wink nudge nudge".

c.) Fart.
