its a 20" haier brand tv made in august 2005. model number is BH2004D.

Sounds like you have a problem with sticking buttons. Take a q-tip and put rubbing alcohol on it and rubbing around the buttons of the remote and the tv.

look for a set of fresh batteries, normally old ones do send incomplete ir codes to the Tv that can be interpreted as other commands (like turning off).
look for a generic remote that is capable of sending the ir codes needed by the haier tv.

Try turning unplugging the tv from the wall, leaving if for about 15 min than plugging it back in. Sometimes a cool down with no power running through them can re set any problems and get it working again

Take the batteries out of the remote, push every button twice and it will reset it. Unplug the tv for a minute, that will reset it.

buy a universal remote they r cheaper than the actual remote

Try changing the batterys in the reomte first, it could be weak power in them.
