You can teach yourself some of the very basics if you have the materials, I suggest in depth books and videos. However for you to really learn you need someone who can watch your every move and push you to improve. There are a lot of hidden applications in some systems, and things that you just can't see in videos or pictures.

No, because there is NO substitute for a certifed instructor, and no book or video (because these types of information are REFERENCE material that is only good to someone who is studying in a formal class setting) will be able to teach you the proper manner that a technique should be executed either.

How're you going to know just where to hit, or where your ready had should be in the case of a counter strike arises. or how strong or effective your fighting stance is going to be if the opponent tries to attack your base (legs).

only by being shown the proper way that a technique should be used with the proper execution by an instructor, can you even have any effect against an opponent.

an instructor can only show you how to properly perform a technique and have the desired effect.

yes and no.

chances are no, however as someone somewhere had created a system of fighting after bieng engaged in many actual fights and had extensive knowledge of the human body, it is statistically possible.

So is spontaneous combustion.

You need a teacher to correct you. In today's society you simply don't have the time to sit and mull about and hire people to spar full contact to test your theories and techniques out.

find a teacher.

fighting is natural, when you have to defend yourself weather you are trained or not, but I don’t think you could actually teach yourself real martial arts in any effective way. there are tons of training DVDs and books available, but I think they are more of an aid than a complete system.

Former UFC Middleweight champion, Evan Tanner, taught himself Jiu Jitsu using instructional video tapes. Tanner has an amazing work ethic and was clearly self motivated, but I think that this shows that it can be done.
