DVD movies use by default Dolby Digital audio. Perhaps your DVD player can't play Dolby Digital.

On the player setup make sure you set up audio playback via the speakers and not via the digital audio out.
On the DVD audio setup, change the default from DD to PCM or 2-ch stereo and see if that helps.

the dvd player likely has outputs for both video and audio. are they all connected? is your av receiver set to the input of the dvd player?

maybe the audio cables are loose or disconnected between the dvd and the speakers
