Decorating a boys room..idea's please?

Question

I have a dark blue paint and a light blue almost white can of paint. He has all primary colors in his bedding.Race cars sheets and such. He has a loft bed. I was thinking of painting the bottom of the room dark blue about 2-3 feet up and then do the light blue,with a wall paper boarder between. Throw a red rug on the hard wood floor. I really want him to like his room so he sleeps in it. He is mentaly slow and chages his mind so often. But cars he always likes. Any creative idea's done on a low budget would be great! It is a small room so I was afraid that the dark paint might make it look smaller. But I want more colors on the wall then light blue and I want to keep it that way for a long time with out repainting in 2-3 years. So trying to keep it nutral in a way. easyer to change wall paper border then repainting. He is 8 yrs old but mentally between 4-8 on different levels..see my problem?

Instead of doing such a strong contrast between the dark blue and light blue, you should mix equal parts of the two paints and create a medium blue.

You then have 3 colors to work with!

Maybe try, instead of using a wallpaper border, just creating another horizontal stripe with the medium blue!
it would be a nice gradation of blue from floor to ceiling.

Different sizes of vertical stripes on one wall would be REALLY awesome. It would add a lot of interest, while maintaining the theme!

What about painting the walls white, with a dark blue racing stripe horizontally on 3 walls. On the fourth wall, maybe a big racing number like you would find on the hood of a race car.

I would definetely go a more neutral route. Say a khaki color. If he tends to change his mind a lot you can always change out the pillows, throws, etc. It doesn't matter what age he actually is or mentally acts. That way you won't have to paint or change out wall paper, you just change the accents as he gets older or changes.

my son's room is similar, he is 8 and loves cars. i ended up taking real license plates and hanging them around the top of the room where a border would be. right now i have them spaced to 4 on each of the 4 walls. he loves it, they are easy to remove when or if he doesn't want them there anymore, and are suitable for a young boy's room all the way up to teenager and beyond. you can get them on ebay and at car junkyards. he may even get into collecting them and learning about the different states and etc.

Sounds like you have a great idea! the dark color on the bottom is good with the light on top. Go with light blue curtains that are plain so you don't have to change them. You can decorate the walls with race car penants, posters and wallies so it won't be difficult to change later.

My son's room is dinosaurs and we have a 6 foot dinosaur on his wall that is a wallie. It's basically vynal sticker that is removable (not like wallpaper) so when he outgrows the dinosaurs we can easily remove it from the wall. Good luck and have fun!

You should try some stencils. They're really good for adding a finishing touch onto a room and you can buy ones in the shapes of cars, lorries, trucks, etc. Good luck finishing and I hope you get some good ideas.

i think you should let him paint a portion of a wall or just one entire wall and leave that up to him wat he wants to do with it...i know that sounds wierd but he'll like it because he did something to help...also be sure to put a lot of paper on the floor so he doesn't mess up the floor...let him have fun with it and the other walls are up to you! to do however you want...im thinking about getting a wall in my room that's painted all black and have anyone that wants to sign it with metallic silver sharpy...just for fun

Let them do it! My son decorated his own room and his ideas were weird but it gave him such a great boost in his self steem when we went to the store to choose whatever he wanted. This will bring you all closer together,.. My nephew who is autistic did the same.

BLUE IS A COLD COLOUR FOR A BEDROOM REALLY, YA WANT TO MAKE IT INVITING & FUN, FIRST I WOULD GET THE SMALLEST WALL AND PAINT IT USING BLACKBOARD PAINT. THATS HIS FUN WALL! COLOURED CHALK THE LOT! LET HIM CHOOSE A NICE WARM INVITING COLOUR HIMSELF, THEN GET HIS FAV PICTURE BOOKS (SECOND HAND SHOP) & COLOURING BOOKS, CUT THEM OUT AND EITHER APPLY BOARDER LEVEL OO RONUD EDGES OF ROOM AND APPLY A GENTLE MATT VARNISH ON TOP OF CUT OUTS,SOMETHING YOU BOTH CAN SHARE AND HAVE FUN DOING AT THE SAME TIME

Try to relate to the movie Cars...or just go in the room with him tell him what you think is cool and then ask him for his opinion and from that point you and him can free style on the room.
