The word 'fossils' cam from Latin 'fossus',which literally means "having been dug up") so they are are the mineralized or otherwise preserved remains or traces (such as footprints) of animals, plants, and other organisms found in rock formations and sedimentary layers or strata.
The fact that most fossils are the complete remains of animals or plants that must have been terminated suddenly and buried before it can decay, is a proof that there must be a sudden worldwide catasthrope like a global flood as recorded in the Bible.
Some scientists who deny the account of the flood in the Bible explained that it must be caused by a giant meteor which obliterated life when it hit the earth a long time ago. But a meteor no matter how big it is would not have been able to cause petrification of all animals and plants around the globe, like world wide flood could do.
Honest scientists will admit but there are fossils of animals which are supposed to be extinct a long long time ago, found side by side with those which are supposed to be very recent.

Fossils are the mineralized remains of animals or plants or other traces such as footprints. The totality of fossils and their placement in rock formations and sedimentary layers (strata) is known as the fossil record. The study of fossils is called paleontology.
Some animals were quickly buried after their death (by sinking in mud, being buried in a sand storm, etc.).
Over time, more and more sediment covered the remains.
The parts of the animals that didn't rot (usually the harder parts likes bones and teeth) were encased in the newly-formed sediment.
In the right circumstances (no scavengers, quick burial, not much weathering), parts of the animal turned into fossils over time.
After a long time, the chemicals in the buried animals' bodies underwent a series of changes. As the bone slowly decayed, water infused with minerals seeped into the bone and replaced the chemicals in the bone with rock-like minerals. The process of fossilization involves the dissolving and replacement of the original minerals in the object with other minerals (and/or permineralization, the filling up of spaces in fossils with minerals, and/or recrystallization in which a mineral crystal changes its form).
This process results in a heavy, rock-like copy of the original object - a fossil. The fossil has the same shape as the original object, but is chemically more like a rock! Some of the original hydroxy-apatite (a major bone consitiuent) remains, although it is saturated with silica (rock).
Here's a flow chart of fossil formation:

Fossils are ancient bones of the dinosaurs or something like that. Scientists waste time on them for evolution and also that the bones are extremely ancient, over 2000 years old.

Isn't God powerful enough to create a universe that includes Evolution? Why do God and Evolution need to be mutually exclusive?
Why would God create a fossil of a creature that never existed? Why would God create rocks that can be dated as millions, hundreds of millions, or even billions of years old? If God created the universe only a few thousand years ago, why would He fabricate evidence that the universe is billions of years old?
Why wouldn't God create a universe with Evolution?

Fossils are evidence of things God created before He made us.
As for whether finding them is a waste of time, if you think it is, then spend your time other ways, but you have no right to tell others how to spend their time.

Why are you asking about fossils in religion and spirituality? Fossils are where some thing died and mud or dirt piled up on top and turned into rock, leaving the imprint of the thing.

Organic remains-usually bones- found almost exclusively in sedimentary rock. Their usefulness to science is obvious-it gives us an insight into the development and evolution of species.
