That is private business. I would be more likely to answer the question "how much did you pay for your house" because at least that is public record. It is none of her business whether you have 15/30 year fixed/ARM mortgage. That is private financial information. You were right not to answer, and she was rude to ask.

I think you should have just told her that you keep your personal financial business to yourself. That if she was inquiring because she wanted to buy a house it might be a good idea to start by talking to a Real Estate agent or a Mortgage Company. Leave it at that, if she persist again then I would tell her that the question makes you very uncomfortable and you will not answer.

Quit being so arrogant and ask her nicely why she wants to know. Maybe she has no clue what houses cost and wants to buy one some day. Maybe her relative is getting in over her head and she wants to give some advice. Maybe she wants a raise and can't figure out how to start the conversation.

JUST ASK!

Then you can decide if she is prying into your private affairs and suggest it is not polite to ask that question (She may not know that).

She also may not have good language skills and isn;t asking what you think she is asking. I have some spanish speking relatives that ask questions in english that sound very confusing!

She probably thinks you have a good relationship with one another, and that she can ask those sorts of things. It is rude on one hand, but she probably just really likes your house.

Then again, she might think you're in foreclosure and want to hop on that.

I would have told her that it was well within my means and that if she was interested in home ownership, she would need to contact her banker.

I find it rude as well, but offer a suggestion that moves her along without creating what could become a difficult situation, i.e., you still need to use her services.

It depends on the context of the conversation, I think. If you were already on the topic, and she asked in a polite way, I can see that it could be okay. But most of the time, not.

What is the big secret ?
All the lending agencies know.
What harm can it do to let someone else know the realities of home ownership.
Why did you withold your answer?
Why did the question bother you.
Perhaps you need to explore your attitude to this incident.
Ask your houskeeper why she asked this question not us.

Yes, very rude. I suspect that there was reasoning behind her actions but that is no excuse. If I were you I would lower her pay and perhaps fire her if anything else of this nature happened.

I would've asked her why she wanted to know that...and then I would've said "It's within our price range" and if she still pressed the issue - i'd flat out tell her that it's rude to discuss other people's finances.

a-lot of people don't realize that discussing finances is very personal....and some people are just rude....instead of saying "it's low" you'd have been better off saying something like "that is a personal question" or "i don't discuss my personal finances" that is enough for most people
