In the past Vets used to wait until a cat 'matured' before spaying/neutering...now they can be spayed/neutered shortly after 8 wks old

Some vets will do kittens as early as 8 weeks. I personally like to wait til they're about 4 - 6 months old. Just don't wait too long!

You need to wait until at least 6 months so the testosterone production allows the urethra to grow to its full potential. Technically you can neuter earlier but the earlier you neuter before 6 months the more likely your cat will become blocked when urinating. My cat was neutered at 5 months (before I was a tech and new better) and he has been blocked and had to be on prescription diet because of it. It is very painful if they are blocked and if they have to put a catheter in it can be VERY Expensive, so I would recommend waiting until 6 months just to give your cat the best chance for not having blockage problems in the future. Hope this helps

Depending on the state, some have weight requirements like 6 months old or XX lbs. Some states require the female to go into he first heat. Check with your local humane society. They sometimes offer free spaying and neutering, Like NYC.

They are doing them now days quite young. I think that they have to weigh a certain amount, before they can be altered, although it used to be about 6 months of age. Check with your vet on this.

It can be safely done any time after 3 months. My neighbor is a Vet and she fixed all three of my cats for me.
