Your journey to British citizenship is right at the beginning and still has a long way to go.

You first need to get a visa to settle in the UK (sometimes called indefinite leave to remain). Generally you will need to wait five years from the time you entered the UK before you can apply for this. There are lots of special requirements around this, so make sure you research further.

Note that from April 2007, you will need take the Life in the UK Test before you can apply for your settlement visa. There is lots more useful information about this at http://www.lifeintheuk.net

Once you have passed your test and have your settlement visa, you must wait a further year before you can apply for British citizenship.

So to answer your question, it takes at least six years before you are eligble for British citizenship. In your case, you need to wait another four and a half years.

I think you have to be in the UK about 3-5 years before you can apply for citizenship. You would need to apply to the Home Office. HTH : )
