Most of the seeds sold for birdseed is primarily grown for other uses. Rapeseed, Canola, Safflower, Sunflower, and Niger seeds are grown primarily for their oils. The oils are used for cooking and as additives to paint and other industrial products. Millet is primarily grown for human and livestock consumption.

Seeds are generally created by either a grass, fruit, flower or other growing plant. Grass creates a common grass seed and another example the sunflower seed from the sunflower etc. This site will be more descriptive: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeds
