Relax around the hotel pool, read a good book and drink alcoholic beverages. I'm not a big gambler, have been to Vegas three times in my life and frankly, I am just fine with never going back. It's just not my type of place.

During the 6 years I lived there, avoiding the strip and casinos was my top priority. I visited the (few) historic sites and hiked the trails around Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon, etc. With that said, I did visit the strip on rare occasions, usually when a friend or relative came to town.
Avoid the zoo, it's pathetic. Bonnie Springs (old west town) is a bit cheesy but fun and costs very little. Visiting the old Las Vegas (Freemont Street) is dangerous with so many homeless and beggars but that's the scenery backdrop of many of the old movies.
Lake Mead, Hoover (Boulder) dam is awe inspring but due to the changes in security, the dam tour is a waste of time/money.
Mount Charleston is beautiful but lacks services other than one over-priced restaurant, one over-priced and usually full hotel and a few dozen picnic tables (a fee may apply for use). During the winter, a small, little used ski area.
Most people go to Las Vegas for the glitz and glamor; hoping to see a movie star, get married, win a jackpot or just do what they can't do at home. Most have a good time and few win. It's much like a 24 hour, 365 day carnival or circus. Just be prepared to pay too much and meet some of the rudest people on the planet, tourists.
