It means to let the spirit control your tongue to deliver a message

There are two distinct meanings.

The first occurs in The Acts of the Apostles, where the apostles preach to a crowd in languages they don't understand but which people in the crowd from different countries do.

The second occurs in certain of the more emotional christian congregations. The members of the congregation sing/speak a kind of melodious babbling noise. This is believed to be a gift of the Holy Spirit and is variously identified as an unknown foreign language (occasionally one hears stories of visiting foreigners/experts in ancient languages recognising the language), the language of the angels or some form of "holy" speech. Non-members of those congregations think it's merely gibberish which makes the members feel good, as singing usually does.

It means being able to speak in differnt languages. Acts chapter 2 tells the story of the 12 disciples being able to proclaim the gospel so that all the differnt people, of differnt languages could understand them.

In the last 100 years or so, some denominations have turned this into to concept of speaking in a spiritual tongue. In a gibberish language that that can only be interpreted by someone equally posessed by the Spirit. Most reputable churches have cast this understanding aside as it became obvious that people would falsely speak in gibberish claiming the ability to speak in tongues. If no one can understand them, then it is truely not of the Spirit.

There are two forms of "speaking in tongues."
1. This form of speaking in tongues is to speak a language you don't know or have studied to instruct others of that language. This would be speaking a language that other people can tell what language it is.
2. The other is what some claim to speak when they talk to God so that the devil cannot understand the words. This is often refered to as "the language of God" and no one on earth will understand this language but God will know every word.

Speaking in tongues is the act of speaking in a tongue that you have not learned. It simply comes out of your mouth without the understanding of your mind. You have the choice as to when and for how long you speak in tongues. You are always in control of your senses, just like when you speak in your everyday language.
In Acts chapter 2 you can read all about it. If you wonder as to why people can speak in tongues I will tell you that it is the sign that God's Holy spirit has been received by that person as a further baptism, the baptism of fire that John the baptist mentioned. You can read about that is the Gospel of Matthew.
Read it and learn all about it. It is all fascinating.
God bless you.

In the Bible it says God gives the Holy Spirit and with it come "The gifts of the Holy Spirit" One of those "gifts" is speaking in tongues. But they say it is only real when there is someone that can interpret the what the guy that is speaking in tongues is saying ( that's another gift of the Holy spirit. But if you want to skip the whole Holy Spirit part, just down a bottle of Vodka and you too will speak in tongues.

To speak in a foreign language.

Acts 2:7-11 --
7 Indeed, they were astonished and began to wonder and say: “See here, all these who are speaking are Gal·i·le´ans, are they not? 8 And yet how is it we are hearing, each one of us, his own language in which we were born? 9 Par´thi·ans and Medes and E´lam·ites, and the inhabitants of Mes·o·po·ta´mi·a, and Ju·de´a and Cap·pa·do´ci·a, Pon´tus and the [district of] Asia, 10 and Phryg´i·a and Pam·phyl´i·a, Egypt and the parts of Lib´y·a, which is toward Cy·re´ne, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cre´tans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues about the magnificent things of God.”

There are two basic varieties. First is the kind where the preacher teaches in his own language, but the audience HEARS their native language instead. I know someone who had that happen to him.
Then there's the kind where you just let your tongue 'do its own thing', and trust that the Holy Spirit uses that to communicate either with the congregation or to guide your prayers as they need to go. I take that one with a grain of salt.

LOL "gibber jabber" is pretty much what it means. It is just people saying weird stuff because they think they are possessed and they get into a group hypnosis.
