The police won't catch you unless you're working illegaly. When you'll try to leave the country that's the problem. I believe you can go to the DAS and get like a permit to stay longer, I think is not too easy to get (unless you have all your papers) because they ask for a lot of papers, and also Colombia is not big on foreigners (historically speaking, Colombia has never allowed too many foreigners). You also should check on poorbuthappy.com, but those guys are very pessimistic, so be aware.

Well, my advice is that do not do anything silly there in Colombia. Colombian jail is not a nice place to be. Try to do everything right.
Once you enter Colombia, you will be given from a 15 day to 90 day stamp on your passport. When you are approaching the expiration deadline, go to DAS (Calle 100) with the documents to extend your stay for another month. You need two color passport photos, a completed form, bank slip/receipt that you have made the payment (approx. USD30) and ticket leaving Colombia. Then with a couple of hours wait, you should get your extension.
If you are caught with an expired visa for any reason or as you are trying to leave the country, you will be taken to DAS. The officers can sometimes be nice and sometimes they may be not that nice, depending on your luck. They may even make you pay from between $200,000 pesos to 4 million pesos fine for your visa expiration. The process can be complicated if you still want to go through the extension while your visa is expired. It is called the "salvoconducto" or the safe conduct. I had a horrible experience doing that, trust me! In the end, I had to use my contacts in DAS to help me.
If you like to stay in Colombia for more than 6 months, then either you get a job or marry someone there or be a student.... all these will guarantee you a visa to stay without any problems. :)
Good luck.

Basically do what Belle said. Don't just stay in the country for 6 months wihtout at least trying to renew your visa. When you finally leave and they stamp your passport you're going to have a problem if they see that you overstayed your visa.

No, you dont have to weary about your visa in Colombia if you are a good man or woman and not a troublemaker. You can even work here with an expired visa and authorities here are not very strict with those formalities. In Colombia everyone is welcome.

As of now, you can get a tourist visa only for 30 days. I don't know the renewal rules, if any.

You see the problems with all of these countries, like Colombia, Mexico, Peru, El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc. is that they will implement their immigration law against any foreign born immigrant in their country and is OK, But for the USA to implement our immigration laws against any of them is RACIST and unfair.. That's the double standard of the issue, don't you think???
