If it's something I know for sure I just answer it. I usually back it up also. If I have to think it over I might research information to support my thoughts.

It's funny. I'm one of those who tends to get new ideas when I'm talking/typing. Amazing how often I'm in the middle of a question and I look back at what I typed, and I think "Wow, I didn't know I thought that".
So both, depending.
