However much you decide try crown currency exchange. They give you a better rate the further in advance you pay and they deliver to your door the day before you go!

Exchange rates are really good at the moment.
I assume you are taking a credit card for stores, restaurants etc...?
For tipping, taxi's and snacks, I would say that $500 should be more than enough. You should be able to get that for well under £300 at the moment.
Just remember to use up your cash before you come back and have a great time!

depends...are u staying at a hotel or with someone...because a hotel can be about $150-200 a nite if ur staying in the heart of manhattan...than u have to add in food, transportation and and entertainment...so with hotel, food, transportation, and entertainment for 7 days i would say $2100-$2300
