I would not give my dogs a bath but once a month. They hav oil in thier fur that if you bath them to much you can really dry out the skin. Ask you vet what shampoo you should use and NEVER use human shampoo.

Dogs don't need baths very often, unless they are just very dirty. The only time my dogs get a bath is right before a show. I have a 10 month old Shepherd that has never had a bath. If you dog lives inside (which I assume it does, based on the breed), 2-3 times a year is probably sufficient. General brushing and regular cleaning should keep the dog clean.

It's not recommended that you bathe a dog more than every 6-8 weeks. Otherwise you can dry out the skin and damage the coat.

Make sure that you brush weekly. If you want a between bath item and say your little low to the ground dog gets muddy paws and stomach, use a waterless shampoo. You spray it on, rub to make a foam and then towel off. It won't strip the oils in the coat like a normal shampoo but doesn't deep clean either.

This site has some great products. I use these products on my show dogs and client dogs.

It depends on the dog and what you do with him. Many people who show their dogs bathe as often as once a week, but for the average dog and dog owner, that's too much.

I bathe my dog on average once a month because I have allergies and keeping him clean keeps my allergies manageable. I think once a month is fine for most dogs. Make sure you use a dog or puppy shampoo, as human shampoo is the wrong pH and will dry out the dog's coat. You should also be brushing your dog's coat at least once a week, but usually more often than that. This helps disperse the oils, pulls out dead hair, and gets some of the dirt and dust out of the coat.

If you are really concerned about the quality of your dog's coat, consider looking into feeding a super-premium quality food (usually only available at privately owned pet supply stores and pet boutiques) and/or supplementing your dog's diet with Omega 3 and 6 EFAs (which are found in fish oils).

Most dogs, including a dachshund, do not need to be bathed more than once a month. You can make exception if he/she gets into something particularly smelly. In between baths you can use dog/puppy wipes (which do not have the alcohol content of baby wipes that would dry your dog's skin) to reduce any doggy odor or remove dirt, etc. I'd recommend trying to only bath him once every 2-3 months at the most.

All dogs are different. Some dogs never seem to need a bath and others should be bathed every few weeks. The odor you detect from your dog is a result of common bacteria on the skin breaking down the oils naturally present on the surface of the skin. So, the oilier the skin the easier it is for the bacteria present to have a feast and create metabolic chemicals that we detect as odorous. Have your dog checked to see if he has a condition called seborrhea and then consult your veterinarian or groomer about the right shampoo to use to minimize the oiliness of the skin. You might have to bathe your dog consistently every two weeks to keep the odor and oiliness under control.

Bathing your dog too much can cause skin irritation. Be sure to use a mild soap and conditioner. Short haired dogs really don't need as many baths - unless your dog likes to really get outside and get dirty. And during the cold weather you really shouldn't bath too much with the heaters on his skin could really dry out. Once a month during the spring/summer and every month & half during the winter at most.

I had a dauchsaund once and I would give him a bath about 1 or 2 times a month! That would be pretty good.

It would depend on your dog. My dog gets a bath every week because she loves playing in the dirt in the back yard and since she is trully an inside dog and is allowed everywhere (couch, bed chairs) she must be clean so whenever she comes back from the backyard extra dirty she gets a bath. At my old place where ther was no backyard for her to get dirty in, she was getting bathed every two weeks.

My mom has mini dachshunds. They're such cuties.

I'd say your dog will need a bath when he's dirty, or stinky. It's not good to bathe too often, and with a little indoor dog like that, he'll probably only get smelly after about two weeks or a month.
