Most commonly, a misdemeanor is a charge for which the maximum sentence is a jail term of a year or less, while a felony is a charge for which the maximum sentence is more than a year in prison or death.

Again, in general, the amount of any fine does not determine whether an offense is a misdemeanor or felony, and usually if an offense is punishable by a fine only it is not a felony no matter how high the fine may be.

One of the main differences is where and how you will be punished. A misdemeanor is a lessor offense like fighting, petit larceny or disturbing the peace. When charged with a misdemeanor, you may just get a fine or you can be fined and go to jail - usually run by your local sheriff. For a felony, you go to prison versus jail and you could be sentenced to life in prison if it is a very serious crime - like murder or child abuse. If not outlawed in a particular state, you even be put to death as your punishment.
