A 17 month old shouldn't be waking up in the middle of the night for a bottle. In fact, he shouldn't be on the bottle at all anymore.
You're just going to have to take it away cold-turkey. That's right--NO MORE BOTTLES. Even if he cries, even if he's screaming at the top of his lungs don't give him a bottle.
At meal time, give him a sippy cup. He probably won't use it at first, in fact it'll probably end up tipped over or thrown on the floor but don't give him a bottle. Keep offering the sippy cup and eventually he'll use it.

Start giving him a sippie cup in the day with all of his meals. Try at nap time. At night, still give him a bottle, but when he looks like he is getting the hang of the sippie cup, switch to it. If you just give him a sippie cup all the time all of the sudden, he may throw a tantrum. Ease him into it. I am getting my 14 month old off the bottle. He is having a hard time at bed time still, but in the day the babysitter and I use nothing but sippies. Good luck.

Throw the bottles away. It's VERY VERY tough but it may be the only way at this point. Sippy cups can still cause problems. Drinking out of regular cups in the kitchen (not carrying them around) is best...even at 17 months. It may be a stuggle but before long they will learn who's in charge, and learn how to use a cup like a "big boy". ;o) Good luck. OH! Also, try not to react to his outbursts...it only fuels them more.

1) It is perfectly normal for a 17 month old to wake during the night, see studies below.
2) A sippy cup, particularly a soft no-drip spouted one will not help your problem because they can still be consumed while laying down
You can try offering water instead of formula in the night, and see if that helps. I wouldn't bet on it though. Your baby is probably old enough to drink from a regular cup, or cup with a straw. Try the straw first, it will cause less mess. In the middle of the night offer the formula with a straw of from a cup, as this must be used in an upright position.

Don't give him bottle in the middle of the night anymore. He is old enough now that if you fill him up before bedtime he should be just fine until morning. If you want him to use a sippie cup then you need to give him water or milk at meal times in the cup. Help him hold it at first and then let him do it. The joy of sippie cups are that they don't leak so he will figure it out. Kids need to be shown then let be to figure it out on their own. It gives you a break and it gives them a sense of self relience. If he wakes up in the middle of the night try soothing him back to sleep with soft music or rubbing his back for a few minutes.

Try a graduated sippy cup. They are soft spouted sippy cups with interchangable lids. You can trasition from a nipple on the cup to soft spout leading to the hard spout. I've always introduced cups early on (around 8-10 mos) and have not had any trouble. At 17 mos. your little one is probably less accepting of change.
Good luck! Also, if he has to suck too hard to get any liquid, try taking the spill proof stopper out while he's seated in his high chair. He'll figure out what the cup is for much more quickly. I also went cold turkey w/ my kids and weaned them from the bottle by 12 mos. We just bagged the bottles up and took them to Goodwill for other babies.

When my middle child went from bottles to sippy cups we got her soft top cups. You can find them in walmarts and stuff I can't remember what they are called but they are soft top just like bottles. Then after that slowly but surely change the child to hard top sippy cups.

when he cries for it, don't give it to him in the middle of the night, you are teaching him he's the boss, NOT a good idea. Try having him learn to sip from a straw first, once he's mastered that then gradually take away the bottle.
My son started using a strawcup at 9 months old, bottle at night right before bed by 11 months, no bottle period

If he refuses a sippy then get him a straw cup. My daughter has always used a straw cup. She wont tip a sippy.
At night only give him water. He shouldn't be getting milk in the night. He will be mad about that and protest, but he will get over it.
The water is good for him, the milk film on the teeth is not.
