I've been hearing this the past couple months. At first I thought it was isolated idiots mistaking perhaps the word "mongrel" for this word. Now I'm reading it on the internet. Mongloid is an archaeological/anthropological term for asiatic races. Is this like an ethnic slur now or what? I don't get it. Can someone please explain to me this stupid phenomenon?

I believe( actually I know it is because I just looked up the spelling)it is spelled " Mongoloid". It refers to people living in Central Asia. Specifically, it refers to people of the Mongol race. It should not be offensive since it refers to a specific racial type, buy I rarely hear it used in reference to people of Asian descent. It is also an offensive synonym for people with Down's Syndrome.

Persons suffering from Down's Syndrome were referred to as Mongoloid idiots. In this day and age, the latter is considered a substandard reference of this condition.

The reason is that people with Down syndrome used to be called Mongoloid.

The reason for the insult is basically to call these people mentally retarded. Cheap, I know.

The medical establishment completely avoids this term for Down's now, but it was common even 10 years ago.

In our politically correct world you can't tell the truth because it may hurt someones feelings. I have MS and my wife told someone I was crippled. They corrected her and said, I wasn't crippled I was handi-abled. What are they kidding me. I'm a crippled and I'm not abled anything. Maybe someday they'll have a cure but for now I'm disabled and crippled; that's the fact.
