After posting on a musical related group, my wife and I met before a concert with a bunch of the people from the listserv. We had dinner with them, someone had made special TShirts for the occasion, and we had a ball.
In this situation, it was safe because my wife and I were adults, and we were meeting people in a public place.
I would *not* recommend meeting anyone "from the internet" if:
1) you are a minor
2) you meet privately
3) they will see you drive up in your car (obtaining the license plate number)

All but about five went as well as expected though, to be sure, not all people were brutally honest about themselves and I don't mean just looks. But then, maybe what made it work was I didn't really believe they were either so I could always concentrate on why we were meeting, not on feeling lied to.
Of the five or so, a couple were men dressed as women, a couple were clearly not on for other reasons best left to your imaginations and one was either technically insane with what she wanted or was setting me up to be the patsy in her getting a chance to kill someone and not go to jail for it. With her I went a long a couple times, but disappeared from her life when the really iffy situation was asked for.

Over the last 10 years or so I've met several people from the internet as well as local BBS's. I've found that sometimes good connections can be made when you're not initially distracted by someone's appearence. I met my current fiance on yahoo and he's the most amazing and fantastic man I've ever known!
