one great way to stay awake is to get a lot of air, preferably cold because hot air makes you cozy and fall asleep. another thing is, it's not always true that caffeine will keep you awake, it only has a temporary effect and for some it might even make them fall asleep faster. taking short rests and stretching when you exit the car is good to keep your energized. drink cold water, it will make you feel awake. dont play music that has a hrythm to it, try to play a song that is distracting or annoying.

I drive across country a lot. If you find yourself getting tired for god sakes stop driving. If you have to drive put on music you dont like, open the windows. turn off your heat. Stuff like that.

Sunflower seeds. One of the reasons for getting tired is boredom. So, I eat sunflower seeds, in the shell, to give my brain something else to do (crack the shells in my mouth, no hands, that's cheating) while everyone else is sleeping, playing gameboys ,reading, etc.

Take a small ice chest with ice water...use a wash cloth...dip, squeeze excess water...put it on the back of your neck...always works for me. If really, really tired...and on your way home...squeeze excess water over your head.
