I always figured that house cats mate year-round, but recently a few friends have told me that they actually have a mating season.

Your friends are confused. Cats will go 'into season' and that's when they mate. However, it's not really 'mating season'. Regardless, keep the cats inside and have them fixed. Then, this won't even be an issue.

Spring and summer are usually considered the mating season. Cats can mate at any time of the year though so that is not a rule. It can depend on weather and where you live. Most times cats do not mate in heavy winter areas during the winter, but again that isnt always fact. I live in Texas and we are not having a real winter this year and we are seeing a ton of kittens being born. Usually the amount goes down during this time, but since our weather is so unusually warm we are seeing a lot of kittens.

The best way to keep your kitties from having babies is to get them spay/neutered.

they do not have a "season" as such - although typically more litters are born in late summer or winter that is because more people let their cats out in spring and summer than they do in the winter months so you will find birth numbers reflect that...

this is the big problem becuase 1 cat can have 2 - 3 litters a year.. if each of those litters is on average 4 kittens all all live and reproduce in a few years you have over 1000 kittens - and homes are so hard to find

2-3 MILLION kittens and cats are euthanized every year due to lack of homes --- really due to not enough people spaying or neutering

Sure, mating season for cats is anywhere in between the beginning of January to the end of December. (IE: they can go into season anytime of the year).

generally in the warmer months they will go into season, but if they are inside cats and you have the house heated during winter, they will tend to go into season a lot more, cats are environmental breeders

No they don't. They just mate whenever the female goes into heat.

Actually cats don't even have to be in heat to mate, they're induced ovulaters.
