I live with my boyfiend of four years, my younger 18 year old sister and my two kids (not my boyfriend's). Since my two kids are my responsibility is it fair if I have to pay a majority (75%) of the living expenses- rent, utilities? Am I being taken advantage of or is this equitable?

It is not equitable. You should be paying no more than 60% of the living expenses because you are 3 out of 5 living there. But who's paying the rest???

I am in a similar situation--boyfriend of 2 years lives with me and my two kids (ages 4 and 6). No younger sister in the picture though...

I actually pay about 60% of expenses. Reasoning is that the kids aren't officially his step-children, so he shouldn't be financially responsible for them. Since they are smaller, and they are with their father 1/2 of the time, we decided 60% was fairer than 75%.

This only applies to rent, utilities, groceries and household items (like toilet paper, dish soap, etc.), entertainment, and dining out.

We pay our own bills for cell phones, car insurance, gas, clothing and personal items, medical/dental visits, etc.

We have a separate checking account for our joint expenses and we each put in our share monthly and pay the bills from that account.

If/when we marry, we will likely share all our expenses as well as all or income.

I wonder if your18-year-old sister contributes to help pay any expenses? She probably should--though depending on if she's a student, perhaps her share could be quite a bit less. At the very least, I hope she helps take care of the kids and with chores around the house.

Hope that helps!

Where do we find guys like this? Tell him to hit the highway. If you are paying 75%, why not pay the rest and send his butt flying??

NO
There should be an income coming to you from the children's father and if there isn't you should be going after them for the maintenance of their children NOT the boyfriend. The fathers owe you that, not your boyfriend.

I'm sorry to say this but it seems that your boyfriend is taking advantage of you. Maybe you should start charging for any favours you do to him!!
