I have tried dealerships and they do not have keys. I have been told a locksmith cannot make a key for autos. Where else do I look?

Call a ford dealership and ask them to get you a set of keys. They will want to know specific numbers off of the car. Once they have them they can match up the keys set to the car. That and you'll have to prove you actually own the car. At least that worked with my Cadillac. They should be able to find the correct set for your car. I'm not sure why they won't.

A good chunk of modern cars are on record for reproducing a key. Some are even sold with a little metal tag that has a number that a locksmith will contact the company with, to get the key cut numbers. A dealership should be able to take the info for your car and get those key numbers.

a 1998 Escort , any US dealer can get the keycode that was original to the car when it was built... and most have the blanks to cut them to the code... (provided you have all the information such as proof of ownership, 2 forms of ID etc)

You can spend the money, and rekey the whole car for about $300 or so by changing all the locks..but need proof of ownership and other info.

A locksmith can figure out the code if you get one who actually knows cars and is expert in it, but expect to pay big bucks, and very hard to find a person that skilled.. most want to work on home/office locks not cars.

If it's a 1988 however, you are basically screwed, except to rekey the whole car, or a locksmith that is willing to take on the challenge of figuring out the key code.

Hmmm...the dealerships have no keys?...Either your car is stolen or the dealerships don't have a clue...A locksmith can get you a door key...Not absolutely sure about the ignition...If you can prove ownership, I don't think it would be a problem...If you stole the car, well...You're screwed anyway...

Yes a locksmith can make a key for a car, I had it done once. They base it off of the VIN #.

I thought that a locksmith could rekey a car... I would explore that avenue a little more. Because while most may not, you might find one that likes to tinker on things and knows how to.

Good luck!

All dealerships have keys. You have probably done this before and they know you too well.

Are you sure you want to drive? It is very easy to lose another one again. Take a taxi every time and avoid this problem forever.

well being a 98..I don't think the dealer will have a key..so what you need to do is get a new ignition it will come with a set of keys..as far as the doors go you have to go to a lock smith..for that..
