It cost less to make round covers the square ones. They're easier to place over the hole then square ones. They fit better.

A square cover you can tip up on edge and drop through the hole on the diagonal, if you follow me. Similarly with ovals.
A circular hole, however, will defy the most determined efforts in this regard.
This means manholes are one of the few things in the universe that are absolutely goofproof.

Ali is right.. round covers make it impossible to drop the cover into the hole.
And they are called Manhole covers because men work down inside.. If called woman hole covers.. well, you can see the consequences.
They should just be called "Maintenance access covers"
As for goof proof... leave it up to a woman to find a way to drop one down the hole.... kidding..

So that the manhole cover can't fall through the hole. A square or rectangular cover can fall in sideways.

So that they can't fall in and they can be rolled. All manholes are not round, though. some are triangles, which also dont fall in, or squares, which make no sense.

It also makes them easier to move. If they are round they can be easily rolled on their side as opposed to a square.

my hubby is a phone guy and works in man holes all the time. the lids are round but not all the inside...they are like little rooms.

It all started off with men fighting in the streets...There was so many heads bashing into the cement that made holes they decided to go call them man holes.
