You can use either a latex semi-gloss or eggshell (medium sheen) because it makes it easier to clean. Depending on how deep the lavendar shade is presently, you may want to prime first. If it is a pastel, you still may need two coats so the current color doesn't show through.

You will need a good primer. Maybe even 2 coats of primer, depending on the shade of lavendar. Kilz makes a good one, or go to Home Depot or Lowes for an off brand.
For the top coat, use a satin finish, unless the rest of the door is glossy or flat.

If you want quality and durability, you will want to use an oil based paint! NOT a semi-gloss latex, sure, the clean up is a little more, but no latex will compare to the beauty of an oil based paint. I would suggest Benjamine Moore Satin Impervo oil based paint!

depends on what you are trying to accomplish, but i would suggest going to lowe's and getting their american traditions high gloss white - NOT ULTRA WHITE (doesn't cover very well). if there is no lowes near you, go to a hardware store that sells valspar paint (that's who makes american traditions). also purchase floetrol, a latex paint thinner. this will slow the drying process and cuts down on brush strokes.
