The whole myth of 8 glasses of water per day has been debunked - sorry. It came about when some piece of medical literature said we need 64 ounces of water per day, but what the reporters omitted from the article was that we already get much of that water through the foods we eat.

Most fruits and veggies are high in water content, so right there you are getting some of your 64 ounces. You should drink before you get really thirsty and stay well-hydrated, but how much you actually need to drink depends on your activity level, medical conditions, how many fruits and veggies you eat, etc.

It's also been debunked that we have to drink actual "water" to satisfy thirst. Studies have been done at the University of Nebraska indicating that any fluid will do it, including milk, juice, caffeinated or non-caffeinated beverages. It doesn't matter if it's "real" water or not.
