I personally think the term is hilarious. Is it meant to be derogatory?

It comes from Australia. Because the broads in Australia really have broad hips there. Smile.

Broad chest, broad hips. It isn't really meant to be derogatory by most who use it, but it does suggest a general attitude toward women that is not exactly characterized by a high degree of respect. In other words, the speaker doesn't mean it as a direct put-down of a particular woman, but his general attitude toward women may well be somewhat of a put-down, even if he doesn't realize it. Now, if a woman uses the term in speaking of another woman, that's a direct put-down.

Yes it is meant to be derogatory, though sometimes it is apt. Ever looked at some women from behind. Broad.
