What Two Colors Make Blue

In basic color terms, blue is a primary color and cannot be mixed. Of course it can be more difficult than that some times, and for ink it is a bit different.

If you are working with inks (i.e. computer printer ink or screen printing), cyan (a greenish turquoise sort of blue) plus magenta will create a royal blue hue.

If you are working with paints, pencils, chalks, or pastels then you are using subtractive color. In this case, the basic rules apply and blue can not be mixed. Yellow and Red are the other two colors which can not be made through mixing.

If you are working with lights, the rules switch a bit. Lights work with additive color, meaning that the primary colors are Red, Green, and Blue. Again with additive you can not make blue.

Blue is a primary color along with red and yellow. You use them to make other colors.

Red + Yellow = orange
Blue + Yellow = green
Red + Blue = purple

Blue is a primary color and is in its simplest form. If you would like to change the value of blue, add black or white. If you would like to change the hue, add one of the two other primary colors, yellow or red.
