I was thinking of downloading/using BitTorrent, but will files be taken from my computer? Or is there a way of stopping that? Stopping people stealing my information.

Any file that you have downloaded will still be shared until you tell the program not to. Any file that you want to share will be shared as well. Any other file will not be shared.

Never heard of anyone being able to remotely upload files via BitTorrent that you have not designated for uploading.

People are not stealing your information but with torrents if you want to get something, you have to share what you already have.
