I have always started weaning my puppies at about 4 weeks. I start them on formula and soft puppy food (hard food soaked in water or watered down formula). They should still be allowed to nurse on their mother at this point.

At about 6 to 7 weeks old, they should no longer be allowed to nurse on their mother and I mix hard food and the softened food together.

By the time that the puppy is about 8 weeks old, it should be old enough to eat hard food.

The mom will usually start weaning by 4-6 weeks. But if you don't know this answer, if you don't know that it's Shih Tzu, and you don't know that Shih Tzus are dogs, not cats (see category), then you shouldn't really be breeding. A responsible ethical breeder doesn't ask such things on Yahoo! Answers.

Subject: Rudeness

Message: Excuse me, you are very rude and have no idea about me. I am not a breeder I just happen to have to dogs that happened to have pups. God forbid that you make any kind of mistake in spelling or ever have a question because some rude know it all jerk may respond. Now by the name on your email I can see why you have stalkers and I don'e believe it to be because of your sweetness. By the looks of your points and what not you have no life an nothing better to do than answer questions and correct peoples spelling. Why answer if you have to be ugly to people, just keep your so called knowledge to yourself.

Irma, you've been reported for your PM. You know, if you left something out of your original question, it's not my fault. Next time try being specific, or don't be so overly sensitive to things that don't apply to you. Move on and be happy that people are letting BYBs know that it's bad for them to breed.

Signed,

It will be done naturally. Kittens & puppies should be kept with their mother for at least 8 wks. During this time they are socialized & after 6 wks, still continue to learn from their mother. By the time they are ready for adoption they will still be nursing but on a very limited basis. Make puppy food available to them around 3 to 4 wks & as they increase eating puppy food they will be decreasing nursing time.

If you want to sell or buy this puppy do not take it away from its mom until after 8 weeks...that is the earliest you can take it away and still have a good chance of having a healthy puppy.

If you are not selling or buying then just let them do it on their own...just start putting other food after 8 weeks and they'll do it themselves little by little.

The mother will ween them in her own time. Just have puppy food prepared for when she begins. All dogs are slightly different.

And why is this in cats?

You may want to re-ask this in the Dogs area, rather than the Cats area.
