It is treatable by using a synthetic thyroid hormone. I have been on one for about 5 years and have had no problems.

I think you mean symptoms. Symptoms include; weight gain or difficulty losing weight. dry skin, dry thinning hair, IBS with constipation, sensitivity to light, brittle ridged finger nails, sleep apnea, fatigue, depression, feeling cold most of the time, cold feet and hands, headaches, etc.
Treatment is taking a medication once a day for life and getting regular blood tests to see that you are on the correct dose. I recommend a morning only blood test or TSH, Free T4, Free T3, and antibodies. There are various thyroid medications on the market. I currently am on Armour thyroid and found this to be the bst medication for me. I started on Levoxyl, but it did nothing for my symptoms, so I made a switch. It's nice knowing there are lots of different thyroid meds to try. Below is a good website on thyroid.
