My boyfriend got slammed with a reckless driving (93mph) PTA (promise to appear) on January 5th. He was told by his step father that his insurance could triple. He already has a couple points on his license. Is there any way to avoid the insurance increase or minimize the cost of how much it goes up? He is willing to go to drivers retraining, and willing to pay the fine, but he doesn't want his insurance to go up monthly. Is there certain things he should do in court?

Whatever he does... dont plead guilty as JC said. If you plead guilty that you are accepting responsibility for the 93mph ticket. If he pleads guilty he will most likely lose his license. Get a lawyer and plead not guilty. In many states you can bargain it down. He will probably still get points on his license but it will be less. The lawyer will be expensive but in the end it will be cheaper than going to court without one.

He needs to get an attorney -- a damn good one at that. It's very difficult to plead down a WD complaint but that's about his only chance to avoid the hit on the insurance rates.

Depending upon his record, the judge could order SR-22 insurance verification. That will drive costs up even further. More reason to get an attorney.

Plead guilty. I went to court to fight a traffic ticket, and I got to watch quite a few cases before mine came up. I watched people with similar situations as your boyfriend that had a lot of charges dropped or changed. As far as insurance, whatever goes on his record after all is said and done is what the insurance increase will be based on. If nothing changes, his insurance could easily double or triple, especially if he is under 25
