Boys this age are still exploring and learning. And some are ready to read longer chapter books (like Harry Potter).

Building toys like Lego, Erector K'nex, (beware of the magnetic sets if there are younger siblings)

Science sets - chemistry, biology, physics.

Chapter adventure books like A Tale of Unfortunate Events, Harry Potter.

Tickets to the movies

Board games and puzzles

Video games if the child already has a game player

Webzinz!

www.webkinz.com

You can buy them at many stores. It is within good birthday party spending limits [$12CAN] AND it comes with a virtual pet online that is identical to your stuffie! My 9 year old tomboy is addicted!

ALSO:

1 - Nintendo DS [always a great choice!] - they have BUILT IN batteries so no more stacks of AAs!

2 - Ministick [hockey ministick for playing outside at recess]

3 - Pair of mice - you can train them, inexpensive, but very smart!

4 - Board game - Battleship or something equally interesting

5 - Slingshot!

Hope this is a good start for you! Good luck...

On Yahoo!Shopping go to Shoposphere. I posted a list of my son's favorite Christmas gifts on there. The Robo-Reptile was the biggest indoor hit; basketball court was outdoor favorite.
What's your price range?
btw: Both my sons [age 6 & 9] got FlyWheels. Fired them off once and never again. The K-NEX are strewn from one end of the house to the other.

There is a RC Hovercraft out there that my son got for christmas and he loves it and he is also 9 yrs. old. Also a Gift card to there favorite store would be nice because my son feels like he has a credit card and also, you don't have to worry about getting him something he doesn't like.
Sincerely,
The B-day Specialist :)

A gift card to their favorite store. My boys love them. Makes them feel like they have a "credit card". Also, they have fun trying to figure out what they really want, teaches them problem solving as well as the value of money. My oldest boy usually spends the money on a gift card 10 times in his head before he spends it.
