A gift certificate to a home decorating/improvement store. Maybe a magazine subscription for decorating ideas. I wouldn't buy anything to decorate the house unless you are very familiar with their taste. Maybe you could pay for their first internet, cable/satellite or any other bills. They will probably need some form of money or a way to pay for something since they will likely be paying someone to move their belongings.

Far and away the best gift is a Home Depot gift card. They will need paint, tools, etc and this is a GREAT gift to get. Besides, you have no clue what they have or don't have. It's not like they want extra "junk" lying around.

It's already been said, but I think a gift card to a decorating/home improvement store. Maybe Pier One or Cost Plus....somewhere like that. It will be fun for the recipient to pick stuff out. And you don't always know what you need in a new house until you start to get settled. A local newspaper is also a good idea.

But...moving can be overwhelming...I bet they would love it if you offered to help them unpack and get stuff together. Depending on how well you know them. It's a good way to spend some time together, give them some new ideas and motivate them to get stuff done !

A gift card to some type of "home" store (The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, etc.).

A nice boxed collection of picture hangers with a small hammer.

A very nice welcome mat.

Wine and glasses (if you know they drink)

Potted plant (if you know they have a green thumb)

Prepare them a meal (or order pizza) for their move-in day! (they will be too busy to cook)

Help them move!

A gift subscription to the local newspaper

A gift card to Home Depot or Lowes

A houseplant and or a nice vase. Also, a homebaked pie in a nice dish that they can keep. A nice bottle of wine. Floweral arrangement. It all depends on how familiar you are with them and how much your budget will allow.

Cleaning supplies!
Seriously though, the same kinds of things that you would give for a wedding or bridal shower.

if you are really close to them then maybe you know something that they need (pots and pans or a toaster, etc.) or you can give them a giftcard to bed bath and beyond or some place like that.

Maybe a bottle of wine and wine glasses. That way you can toast their new house with them.
