a state-issued Identification card, birth certificate or a US passport. The passport when travelling by land will be required 1 January 2008.
Beginning January 23, 2007, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling by air between the United States and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda will be required to present a valid passport, Air NEXUS card, or U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Document, or an Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, if applicable.
As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Bermuda by land or sea (including ferries), may be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security. While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible. Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

If you are coming into the US from Mexico and traveling on the ground you do not need a passport yet - that does not go into effect until 2008. Here is the link to the DHS has all of the information you need to know about crossing the borders. The new passport regulations only apply to air travel staring in January 2007.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

Im a UK citizen, resident in the US. I went to Mexico last year and noticed that all the US citizens just had to show their passport to get into the country. You wont have to fill out an I94 or anything, but probably just a US customs form documenting what you bought/are bringing into the US from Mexico.

A bottle of water, a gun and a bullet proof vest. Take a picture of Lou Dobbs with you too just in case you see him, you can run in the opposite direction.
