An old trick I used that gets you close for machine threads is

diameter - (1/pitch) = drill diameter

You are still better off using a chart....

This is not a calculation, but this information is available in Machinery's Handbook. For example if you are trying to drill and tap a 3/4-10 thread it will tell you the drill bit to start with. It will also give you thread dimensions such as pitch angle, major and minor diameters, etc.

I've never done the calculations since the dimension you're looking for is usually given in a table or spec sheet.
