My grandmother recently called me and explained that her knee was swollen, the back of her knee pains her, and her ankle is in extreme pain. Does any one have a CLUE as to what may cause this. I have tried to research it but only came up with one explanation: DVT. Her doctor wants her to get surgery and get her knee replaced, but I think it may be something else.
Thanks to all who answer, I really appreciate it!

It might be arthritis. But when I ran a quick search on DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis- I never really got used to alphabet-soup terms)- What I saw showed that surgery might indeed be needed. But most likely not a total knee replacement.

If she does have DVT, that means she has a blood clot deep in her leg that could dislodge and cause her to have a heart attack. She should get that taken care of quickly. But if the doctor wants a total knee replacement, she might want to talk to another physician.

Again, don't wait! This is your grandmother's life here!

Good luck!

As age passes the Calcium and Magnesium content in our bones starts depleting. Due to this there is pain in the bones and muscles. But if the doctor suggests about a surgery then the matter is serious. If u r not satisfied wit hthe doctor's advice better consult another one.

I have no clue what it could be, but make sure she gets a second opinion. The surgery may not be the best answer for her.
