The safer way for booking is on internet.May is rather "cheap" month and not that crowded as would be July/August.

try http://www.villavacations.com we used them when we stayed in umbria back in march. they were easy to work with and had plenty of options. and the people we rented our place from were great and made it a wonderful stay. i would definately use them again and always recommend them when someone is looking to rent during their stay in italy.
