A lot of people want a dog; however does a dog truely fit into your lifestyle? Will you be able to provide the proper care and nutrition for the dog as well as time, energy, and patience? Will you be able to pay for the vet bills and pay in case an emergency rise? Are you will to train the dog and spend the next 12-15 years with a dog? Will you be having a life change in the near future such as moving, going to college, family changes, and will you be able to handle and care for the dog during these changes?

There are a lot of different dogs to choose from if you can do all of this plus more. All dogs like to play and how rough a dog gets is up to how well you teach, train, and spend time with the dog.

I personally have a poodle mix that I took into my home and made time to take care of her and with my life changes I was always sure she was with me. I just recently adopted a min pin and they have a lot of energy and are very curious and alert dogs. I have to make time and olan my class schedule around her not being alone for more than 4 hours since she's a puppy.

There are plenty of dogs that fit that discription. Other things you should also think about are... do you have time for a puppy (as they need almost constant supervision for the first few months, or would an adult dog be better. What size of dog would be right for your home. How much exercise could you provide the dog with. Most dogs do best with a min, of two 30 min walks a day. Some need much more, though not many need less than that.

The breed of dog has very little to do with how rough or gentle he is. Each dog has his own personality ( or should I say doganality?), The big dogs seem to be more gentle than the feisty little guys.
I've had both large and small. AKC registered and muts. The easiest going, most intelligent, one-man pooch was a mix. She was about twenty-five pounds, black and white, and looked somewhat like a half sized Old English Sheep dog, except much prettier.

No one can answer this question for you. You haven't told us anything about your work schedule, your finanacial situation, your lifestyle, your activity level, your home situation, etc. Any answers you get will just be uneducated guesses from children telling you their favourite dog - dogs that will probably be a terrible match for you.

The best thing you can do is visit a shelter or rescue group and see if a dog fits your needs. http://www.petfinder.com The next best thing is to watch a dog show - they are constantly on Animal Planet and USA and write down maybe 10 breeds that appeal to you. From there, visit http://www.akc.org and go to the "breed" area. On the left will be a link to the breed flyer, breed club, and breed rescue group. Click on each one and learn as much about the breed as possible.

From there if you decide you want a purebred puppy, read sites like

http://dogplay.com/GettingDog/index.html
and
http://www.geocities.com/bluegracepwd/wheretobuy.html

to help you find a reputable breeder.

Good luck to you.

Everyone is different in what they are looking for in a new dog. Labs and Golden Retriever's are wonderful big dogs, poodles are nice small dogs. It really depends on what space you have available for the size of dog you get, because its not fair to put a large dog in a small apartment with no yard to play in.

Being playful shouldn't be the first or only consideration. Do you live in a house or apt? What size dog are you looking for? Do you have the time & money for training, vet bills, even emergencies, time with the dog? Leaving it alone for hours, worse in a crate all day, is cruel. If you have the space golden retrievers are great dogs. I love cocker & king charles spaniels they are friendly, smart, playful and loyal.

Hi

Try getting a Yorkshi Terrior. They are small and cute. Also try getting a labodore retriever. They are really freindly. My neighbor has one and its very friendly. If you want a golden Retriver think twice. when they get sick, its a lot of money to pay off their medicine. Also my other neighbor used to have one and it wasnt friendly. But that doesnt mean they all arnt. anyway also try going with a German Shepard. They are very friendly and will do anything to protect u from danger. As long as u protect it and love it. Also try getting a Shiba Inu. They are very adorable and freindly and like to play a lot. Good Luck!
