It isn't hard at all. However, I would recommend sticking to local trains, not express trains. You will get your bearings within the city better if you see where all the local stops are. Also, try the website www.hopstop.com. Punch in the address of the hotel where you are staying and the address of the place you'd like to visit and you'll get simple to understand directions, as well as a map of how to find the place you are going to from the subway exit.

No it's not hard at all. If you stay in Manhattan there are subways every 10 blocks or so away. So whereever you go, you will find a subway. The map is harder than it looks. Something I do is find where I want to go and from there trace along where I originally am at. I try to find other trains too just in case something happens.
if it's too hard you can ask someone. Most people will help you. Also int he train stationt here is a huge map on the platform. Because it's bigger it's not as confusing as the small ones you may have.
Makre sure you know if you are going uptown or downtown. Uptown are numbers going up and downtown numebsr going down. It's not that hard.
have fun

I have been to London and if you can figure out the system there, you should not have any problem figuring out the system here.
It is not a difficult system, especially if you are staying in the main area of Manhattan in which most of the lines run in North/South directions with stops on similar streets.
There are maps in each subway car, on the platforms and in the stations before you pay your fare. Feel free to ask people for help - New Yorkers are very friendly!!

It's not bad at all. Besides reading the subway map, the signs at each station direct you to other lines in the system. You could always ask for assistance at a token booth or call (when you are here)

it looks confusing because it is so large but it really isn't
you can also at any time you get lost or confused or have any question at all call 311 from any phone in nyc and find out anything you need to ask
also if you are in grand central station there is an information kiosk who can tell you exactlly what line goes where i thought the london underground was confusing but once i started to use it i found it wasn't difficult either

no it's not complicated at all. it helps to be aware at all times as to which part of town you're in -- uptown, downtown (not north or south ;-), east side, west side -- so that you'll have a good sense of direction. also, the number-based grid system makes it easy to find your way, unless you're below 14th st (where some of the streets are trickier to navigate).
here's a cool google maps hack to help you find addresses in new york AND also locate the nearest subway stop:

Not hard at all. When you look at the maps they look so confusing, but they are not at all as bad as you would think. My advise is to get a map that shows every street, not just the lines so that you can easily locate cross streets.
