So the top selling album "Dark Side of the Moon" is the truth? or the all time top grossing "Titanic" is the truth? They are fictional, artistic works. There are certainly Bibles on tape and Bible movies, but they aren't best sellers. They certainly didn't out sell the two mentioned above. Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's truth. The idea that the Earth was flat was popular far longer than the Bible.
History has much to do with the Bible selling so well. The printing press was a fundamental instrument of the protestant reformation, and let's not forget the missionaries. Of course, certain sects of Christianity have Evangelical underbpinnings which require the sharing of the word. The "buyers" are more often than not the churches, who certainly have enough copies, and they are given out for free to attract more members - consider the Gideons. If you were to look at the sales number by SEC regulations, the churches would be fined for "cooking the books" on that sales number.

I agree of course that it is the most published book ever, I don't know about most sold but your probably correct in that also. By the way, it is not the authors that sold their work but the middleman, you know the publishers, that are charging for it.
The bible is an historical account of the tribes of Israel in the Old testament and an historical account of Jesus and his teachings in the New. I have often wondered why the two are together at all.
The Old Testament is used by the US military to train their officers in military tactics, they must think that it has some basis of fact. I would ask all participants to please stop shi*ing on others beliefs and treasures. It does you no good to vent in this type of forum and only deepens the distant between the commonality of man. I don't believe that the trees speak or that Krishna is real but I certainly believe in your right and ability to accept that as your faith. I doesn't hurt me at all, just as somebody else believing in their God doesn't hurt me. If you want to hate then hate the people that try to use people's faith to their own ends. I'm not a bible thump-er but an agnostic, I just get really sick and tired of the childish rhetoric that goes on dissing people for their beliefs.
Thanks

Which ever translation that's and the publishing business employer. some Publishing properties who post Bible translations are not neccessarily Christians so i assume they make earnings the comparable as the different e book business employer. however I heard some agencies placed lots of their income into agencies like Wycliffe Bible Translators who translate Bibles into languages the place they have not have been given any Bible of their community tongue. interesting question although!

i looked at the best selling list on wikipedia and it said 6 billion bibles which seems strange because every christian who ever existed would have had to have two bibles each. and as far as i know owning a bible was discouraged up until the reformation. so that means that each christian must have several copies. i don't know anyone with a bible, who's buying them all?

it is also the cheepest book and that doesn't mean its true it just means it is the most popular way of entertainment for a book.
If anything it would proof that it is just a book w/ a following like Lord of the Rings or Star Wars bc as it grows in population more and more ppl will join it.

It is not the great. Try sitting down and reading it straight through. The premise is fairly unbelievable, most of the characters are not very likeable, the theme changes from act one to act two...the only really sympathetic character gets killed... and the spinoffs are horrible!
Talk about a preachy book =P

Agreed. Stolen, purchased, or given freely, who cares? What really matters is that people are reading it.
To the sceptic answerers: It's best selling because it is the truth, not vise versa.

the bible is a great fabrication, just like the stories of zeus. Do you seriously believe that a man lived inside a whale and that mary was a virgin, come on now.

According to whom is it the best selling? After hearing about this from others, I looked it up.... only Christian sites claim this. No book seller or reviewer says this.
Article from the New Yorker - the ONLY article I have found outside of Christian Websites which talks about the Bible being a best seller - the article itself claims it's virtually impossible to determine the actual # of books sold.

Your move. (BTW - You need to confirm your email in order to receive anything...... I was trying to send you the searches I had done, but I won't bore people in here with it.)

Don't ever let yourself get into a situation where sound reasoning is required; you won't make it. The bible's popularity on the bookstands has much more to do with people's gullibility than with any truth that lies in it, which isn't much.
