what does that saying mean to you?

To me it says there is a war between faith and mind. The speaker sees the way things are (life so cold) and it is in conflict with their belief (fire of the soul). Which do they trust? They've held their beliefs so long that now that they are being challenged, they are calling on their faith to win out. Sounds like my life.

It means a selfish person with a pessimistic attitude towards life is trying to protect themselves from the harsh reality that evil and hate exist on the same boat as love and goodness,and by closing off yourself you end up destroying your own soul in the fire of fear and self loathing.

I believe it is someone who is very bitter and complaining and who is aware that he is cruel to others. Perhaps trying to convince himself that in his reserves is an ember that can warm him to be more kind/benevolent.
