Both are very common. Some women prefer the husband to leave during the actual vaginal check, but it's not unusual for a man to stay in the room...at his wife's shoulders so he's not staring. For regular visits that are usually about the heartbeat and vaginal check and that's all, some men do prefer to sit in the waiting room, but most will come. It's just as important to be in the room for the father to hear all the stuff that's going on such as the heartbeat.
I think the most important thing to do is make sure your mommy-to-be is comfortable. If she wants you in the room during the entire visit, stay. If she wants you out for the vaginal check, leave. That doesn't mean she doesn't want you around, but some women find it uncomfortable to have their husbands in the room while some person is sticking their hands inside them....and I mean that in a serious way for everyone who will take it wrong. So ask your wife and don't feel weird either way b/c both are completely normal.
One last thing...as far as ultrasounds go, the man should be there to see the life they created "live."

When pregnant? If my husband were here, he'd come in. He was here for the first couple times (got a little squeamish with the pap they did and the internal ultrasound), but he loved being able to see the pictures of the baby in there. And actually, now that I think about it, all the times I've ever seen men with their wives/gf's, they've gone in, too.

My husband went into the exams with me but left the room if they wanted to do a pelvic exam however at the birth he was the one holding my leg up and saw everything.

My husband always came in for the check ups. He would hold my hand while the doctor checked me and then when we listened to the heart-beat he would take a turn too. It was nice to know that he wanted to be part of the pregnancy even though it was only a minor part.
It is fine for you to go in while your wife/girlfriend is preg. If she doesn't want you there in the room with her she wouldn't have even asked you to go. She would have drove herself!

My husband ALWAYS came in. They always asked him & I if we thought he should leave during a vaginal exam (but he knocked me up right, so he knows what's down there lol). But he always came in anyways. Sometimes he even asks questions too, or remembers the ones I forgot. It's nice, plus then you don't have to re explain everything to him when you get home. Good Luck!!

My husband came in with me, but if you or her are not comfortable with you coming in don't.. But think about it you have already seen down there so it is nothing new to you, plus her doctor should have a cloth or something over her so she is not out in the open.

My husband came in for the appt he went to. He went for the first appt at 7 weeks where we had an internal ultrasound. He went for the U/S at 20 weeks. I think he went for one or two others just to hear the heartbeat. Other then that I went by myself for the appts.

If your wife wants you to be in the examing room go for it, you need to know what is going on since your going to be in the delivery room when your baby is born.

my first husband was comfortable coming in for the whole thing each visit and found it a wonderfull thing. my current husband waited in the car sometimes in the waiting room if he wasn't at work and i found it to be lonely
