I'm trying to get it working again, it won't load Windows....it stays at "A" or "C" prompt. The root directory seems to be missing system files maybe....( using "Dir/a" )

It sounds like you don't have an operating system on the hard drive now, and like your A drive is not set up with cd drivers.
It also sounds like your cd drive is either not booting or the XP cd is not bootable.
If the cd is a genuine Windows CD it should be bootable. If your computer is not trying to boot from it, then you have to go into the bios and set it up to boot from cd before trying to boot from the hard disk.
You will need to refer to your computers documentation for where to set the boot settings since nearly every bios is different.
If you don't have them, you may need to take your computer to a computer shop and have them get you set up so that you can do the install.
Good Luck!

You never said what the problem is or what you're attempting to do.

Added: You'll need to put the XP CD-ROM in the drive, remove any floppy disks, and boot off the CD-ROM.

If it still goes into C: then you are either not booting off the CD or you have a bad CD.
