Is it plain widespread ignorance of the English language or what ?

Yes, wide spread ignorance of the language is the biggest problem and not just in youngsters. I received a letter from my son's teacher that had atrocious misspellings and multiple grammar errors. My impression was that "no wonder", when the teachers have no command of the language it's easy to see why the kids don't learn it.

It is widespread ignorance. It's also the same reason that people don't understand the difference between the words "your" and "you're". Or the words "there", "their", and "they're". Either they're really lazy and don't want to know when to use the correct word, or they just don't care. It really is frustrating to people who use proper grammar.

Probably just not knowing which word to use or careless/unskilled typing.
Young people are not learning to spell in school these days. Lots of young folks have learned to depend on spell checking software. Then and than would be passed over as correct if spell checked.

You should send them all to Germany. Here we maybe don't learn how to write perfect essays but at least how to spell the words... I have really no idea why so many NATIVE English speakers misspell it...
