I am interested in getting a mini dachshund. Anyone have any information on them? I currently have 2 cats, a black lab, and a parakeet.

Please remember anything with "mini" or "teacup" has been bred out of its standards usually into more health problems.

I have 3 and they are a riot. They are a burst of energy but when made to settle they do. They can be a little stubborn so you will really need to crate train. You can look up the breed standard on akc.org or www.dogbreedinfo.com/dachshund. I suggest you search out a reputable breeder because they are prone to back problems and a few other minor problems. Another reason to look for a reputable breeders is because some "breeders" will say they have miniatures when they do not. Minis are 11 pounds and under after a year with the average size being 9 to 10 pounds. I had to wait nearly a year for my mini longhaired female but she really was worth the wait although training her is a challenge. I have to add that yes the Doxie can become overweight but that is because people overfeed. My oldest Doxie is 6 years old and she is in perfect health and weight. They should not be allowed to jump because they are prone to back problems but I can tell you it is nearly impossible to stop them from jumping completely. I think as long as they are not fat that it is not that big a problem. As for being good with kids if any dog is socialized to the world they live in they usually will not have a problem with kids or anything else. The problems a lot of small dogs have is that people treat them as though the are babies by carry them around everywhere and do not take them out often enough.
To JR, the dachshund is shown and recognized in two sizes Standard and miniature and in three differents coats: smooth, wired and longhaired. If they are accepted in AKC and shown this way then they are not bred out of standard. Watch or attend a dog show.

If you are looking for a lap dog, and do not mind digging holes in your yard then a dachshund is for you. They are a stubborn breed, but also loyal and loving. Very brave, I think of them as big dogs in little bodies. They LOVE to eat, you have to be careful not to overfeed them, we have ramps in front of the furniture as it is almost IMPOSSIBLE to keep them off your lap and off the furniture/.Steps are a no no. Remember when you pick up your doxie, to support its back and its hind legs.
The oldest of my dogs tolerate the parrot, the younges 3 think the parrot is a snack. You will probably be allright socializing your pup from the start.

They are just like a dachshunds but smaller :) they are not always good with smaller children, plus the children can easily hurt them because of their size. I like the breed but they are not for everyone. They get obese easier than other dogs so no scraps :)

My parents have owned 4 of these dogs. The most recent one had to have $1,200 back surgery after his hindquarters became paralyzed. Be aware that the long backs and high energy put these dogs at risk for pretty severe injury.
