My DVD has for no apparent reason stoped formatting or erassing whats going on I have read instruction book?

Some dvds are simply crap. If you put the make and number under the "extra info" maybe someone will have solved an equalivalent problem. My dvd is a Sony and it is excellent. It cost £150. My previous one was a LiteOn. It cost the same and was bloody awful.
There are a number of reasons why dvd players might not work, so you need to give out more info.
