-What different rates are aboard a Navy Sub?
-How long are the deployments for someone assigned to a sub?
-How long are you expected to stay on that sub without seeing the outside world? What Im asking is do you dock at ports and let you get out every so often, for how long.
-How many men are usually on the Sub?

i am currently on a sub "Boomer" or a trident submarine, let me start in order on your questions and if you have anymore then send me an email.
1. we have starting forward, STS= sonar tech subs, ET= electrician tech radio and navigation, you have the cooks you have the FT= fire control tech, you have the TM or torpedoman, then you have the MT=missile tech they can only be on tridents and not fast attacks, then you have the MM=or a-gang or the machinest mate then you have all the nukes back aft not sure what all they do lol.
2.on our tridents we usually are gone no longer than 3 months at a time, each boat has two crews so one crew is home while the other is gone.
3. refer to question 3, 3 months max, on a trident you will not pull into any ports and see any foreign countries, you will surface sometimes to have more fresh food brought on board so you will get to see some sunlight but not much.
4. on a trident crews range upwards of 180 men thats enlisted and officers together.

The rate of the personnel depends on the function and type of submarine. I would imagine about a dozen different rates from cook, to engine mechanic, electronic repair, navigation and weapons tech.
Deployment length is officially classified, but the longest would be about 4-6 months.
During the deployment you will pull into ports and be allowed to get out. The length of time depends on the mission, but generally 3-4 days.
The amount of people on the sub depends on the type of sub and it's purpose, and is probably classified as well. If memory serves, less than 100, but more than 30 men per submarine.

Many rates are the same as many commands in the Navy. There are only a few that are different. Sub mariner's are use to some things you take for granted in the surface Navy, like having your own rack(Bed). You may have to share a rack with someone else. Depending on your sea/shore rotation will determine your stay on any ship in the Navy.

I believe that if you are in the sub-service you have a home-port and a 3-month deployment.
Subs usually stick to those two places. There is no reason to go visit a port. They are nuclear powered and they carry enough food to do their mission and return to home-port.
I guess occasionally they do visit another port, but I think it's rare.
